The Little Red Schoolhouse

This one-room school, built in 1805 on Forest Road, served the needs of the 4th School District in Northford. It was situated where Nature-Works is now. Vacated when a new building replaced it about 1904, the old school house was rented for a while and then abandoned. It was rescued in 1927 by the League of Women Voters who had it moved to its present site and restored. It housed the Town Library from 1933 to 1956. Shortly thereafter, the Historical Society took over the school to maintain it as a museum. Second graders in North Branford visit the school as part of their study of North Branford history. One of the oldest typical one-room school houses standing in Connecticut, it is unusual with its side wall attached desks and fixed benches on the three sides of the room.. It is opened on the second Saturday of the month from 1-4 PM. It is closed during winter months for lack of heat. It can be opened by request and on special days determined by the Totoket Historical Society, Inc. Board of Directors.
